Originally from London, I completed a Fine Art degree at West Surrey College of Art and Design before being lucky enough to study at the Royal Academy Schools in London for three years. I have always wanted to paint and chose the R.A. Schools as they favoured figurative painting. Many hours spent in the life room instilled a passion for drawing which is vital to my painting. Still lives in oil were then a landscape to be explored and routes and rhythms found.
In 1985 I moved to Malvern and fell in love with the landscape which gradually drew me in. I taught painting and drawing at Malvern Hills College for 23 years alongside painting out on the hills, using ink and watercolour. Wet on wet washes have a life of their own and combined with strong flowing ink lines, create movement and life. Foregrounds were often framed with frothy white cow parsley, poppies or teasels.
More recently, I have explored the Malvern landscape through oils which offer a grander scale, a scope for stronger colour and broader drawing with the arm, again looking for routes through the landscape into the distance. Ever changing light, the seasons, the weather, the time of day can come together in a moment to create an 'electric ' image, that is gone in an instant. Early morning and evening light are so special. It is these moments that I try to capture, using a photograph but also my accumulated observations and drawings. I wish to create something that conveys that moment of excitement, a strength of feeling. I return to favourite spots throughout the year.
I continue to paint, undertake commissions and exhibit both locally and nationally, including the RA Summer Show, NEAC and the National Portrait Gallery.
I was thrilled to win the popular vote at Malvern's first ever Plein Air Competition in May this year.
Awards and residencies include the Elizabeth Greenshield Foundation Award and AA2A (Artist Access to Art College), Worcester University.
