Kim Whitby BEd Hons MA (1969- )
“I draw and paint from life; frequently outdoors. I work in colour with oil or watercolour, but I am most happy drawing and mark-making with ink on paper. I enjoy exploring and controlling ink’s graphic speed, alongside the mild sense of danger which accompanies using this decisive mark-making medium. Tone, pattern and structures appeal to me in terms of subject matter as are all the many aspects of scale. I work in many sizes. I have a particular love for immersing myself in historical or geographical places of interest and uniqueness. I need to see and experience my subjects in person and adore working en plein air.”

“I draw and paint from life; frequently outdoors. I am becoming increasingly aware my strongest work is usually made direct or en plein air; when I immerse myself in environments. I have a particular attraction to historical or geographical interest, or places with some type of uniqueness. I am best known for my work in black ink, but I also enjoy working in colour on both paper with watercolour, and with oil paint. I am attracted to tonal and patterned visual elements; enjoying the mark making opportunities and challenges these aspects present. Structures appeal to me as subject matter whilst I also value the formal structural elements which structures can bring to compositions. I relish exploring scale, in both the formats I work in, and by attempting to capture a sense of scale and the impact of something’s size in my work.”
