I have lived in the shadow of the Malvern Hills all my life. I originally trained as a Primary School Teacher at St Mary's College, Cheltenham with art as my main subject.
When I retired from teaching in 2008 I knew I wanted to paint, and so my journey as an artist began. I experimented with various mediums and settled fairly quickly on oil paints. I have walked the Hills since childhood and they became my primary inspiration. Over the years with dog walking I have acquired an enormous fund of subject scenes to paint
The hills are always changing from season to season and from day to day. I am naturally attracted to the lighter moods of the hills, from the spring light in bluebell woods to high summer on the ridge line, the power of British camp and to the gentleness of the meadows and fields below.
My paintings also include subjects as diverse as scenes from the Greek and Welsh landscapes. In contrast to my oil paintings I also do a small number of pencil sketches.
I have a studio in the garden where I work and display many of my paintings. Visitors are welcome by appointment.
Contact details can be found on my website www.gillyhancock.co.uk together with a selection of paintings and prints.
