I graduated from Swansea Metropolitan University in 2010 with a first class honours degree in General Illustration and although I was born in Herefordshire, I found much of my passion for what I do now along the beaches of South Wales and Gower. Impassioned by the beauty of the coastline, I was shocked by the volumes of litter left behind by beach users, and began collecting it during my visits to the coast. Combining litter collections with my love of printmaking, I developed a unique way of working, creating 'collagraph' prints of my collected items to form unusual shapes and textures. Now working predominantly in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire, I collect most of my litter from our roadsides, thrown by the passengers of passing cars. I accompany my work with an ‘ingredients’ list, revealing where and when the litter was found.
Alongside creating my own work, I aim to raise the profile of litter through inclusive creative workshops. These workshops start with a litter pick and develop into printmaking projects, resulting in a range of outcomes. I have been a creative practitioner for Ignite CIC and Meadow Arts, and have been awarded funding from UnLtd Wales, The Prince’s Trust, Swansea Foundation and Herefordshire Comunity Foundation. I am currently delivering workshops for Longlands Care Farm in the form of 1-2-1 therapeutic art sessions during term time, and often deliver workshops for HAF / Severn Arts during school holidays. I would love to offer regular evening classes from my studio at home, and will be looking into offering these by the end of the year.
Since returning to creative activity post-pandemic (after a long stretch of home schooling my children) I have been seeking to develop my artistic practice. Last year I completed a plein air painting course in Cornwall with Newlyn School of Art which helped to free up my creative approach. I continue to paint outdoors, inspired by my dad, Bill Evans, and the beautiful landscape in which we live. I am working to find ways of bringing the spontaneity of outdoor painting into my printmaking.
