I have been involved in Open Studios for a number of years, but this August will be a different experience for visitors. I have recently developed room in my house for a permanent gallery space, alongside my studio that I hope visitors will enjoy. Also, I am in the process of developing new work that will give visitors an insight into how my art evolves.
I studied Fine Art at Birmingham City University and Figure Drawing at the Slade School of Art in London. My work is grounded in classical technique, but I strive to use my materials in as many ways as possible to achieve the effect that I want.
I feel that the primary purpose of art is to provoke an emotional response from the viewer, and I believe the works become emotive as the artist’s thoughts and reflections form on the canvas. A painting can be different things to different viewers, and the viewer’s response need not have any connection to the artist’s intention for the painting to be successful.
My subjects are chosen for a variety of reasons at any one point in time; they are what I ‘feel’ I want to work with. Those who know me may feel that they have a connection to a particular personal circumstance, but I do not contrive this.
I mainly work in watercolours and oils, with some printmaking, and all my work is underwritten with observational drawing.
My work has taken awards in London and locally.
I very much look forward to welcoming you to my studio and gallery over the Open Studios week.
