I am a Worcestershire artist based in Bromsgrove exhibiting locally and in St Ives, Cornwall. I enjoy working in a variety of media, but watercolours and inks are my favourite.
Watercolours are free and fluid, and challenge you to control the paint as it moves across the surface of the paper. Adding inks and line brings expression and vibrancy to my work.
When I approach a new piece of work I’m searching for the energy, rhythm or personality of the subject. I’m drawn to the beautiful and wild north coast of Cornwall and this area features a lot in the work that I do.
For me a perfect day is to be walking the coastal paths with sketchbook and paints, and time to stop and really immerse myself in the beauty and the power of the setting. Sometimes I just sit and sketch, or I might take endless photographs to bring back to my studio to work with. Lockdown
inevitably had an impact and I was compelled towards painting and drawing portraits which I found I also love.
Art is my second career and it’s such a privilege to be able to fill my days with creativity and exploring ways of expressing emotion and humour through my work - whether a cheeky seagull sketch, stance of a figure or mood of the landscape.
Studying at Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall for two years was an inspirational experience and has consolidated and grown my art practice.
I also enjoy sharing my love of art with others. Through teaching I find great satisfaction from seeing the joy and sense of achievement gained from painting and drawing.
Being part of the small team of organisers and taking part in Worcestershire Open Studios is important to me. As an artist you are rarely standing next to your painting when it is viewed and I find it so inspiring to see the response it generates. Open Studios offers a a unique opportunity to share new ideas, and build on the feedback gained into developing your work.
So many visitors enjoy art and feel that they would like to be creative themselves - some lack confidence, some have never tried. In sharing my art I hope I can inspire others to pick up a brush and have a go and maybe begin a lifelong pastime which will bring them many hours of pleasure.
Of course it’s always wonderful if somebody likes your work enough to want to take a piece home with them, that is the ultimate compliment.
