I am inspired to paint things that I see. This can be anything from a striking view to a close-up detail. The common factor is that it 'grabs' me, and makes me want to express my response in paint, not so much as a descriptive record but as an exploration of shape, colour, space and light. This exploration can take me a long way from what I first saw, but for me that starting point is what gives authenticity to my creative process.
I have lived and worked all my life in rural Herefordshire and a lot of my work has its starting point in the landscape very local to my home, places I know well, and see change with the seasons..
Having moved into a new studio at the beginning of last year I have been drawn to paint on a bigger scale, but at the same time am really enjoying doing quick oil sketches 'on the spot' - these are my raw material.
