I have always been interested in creative mark making using lots of different techniques. Past influences have included life in Zimbabwe and Eskdale in the Lake District - a complex collection of colours and culture and I think it important to have as wide a creative pool as possible. My studio is an eclectic collection of materials, reference books, printing apparatus, general artefacts and fabrics all pulled together in colourful array. I love working with colour and rich textures to create vibrant covers. I collect papers from a variety of sources, including making my own, binding them together by a range of methods. The making of a book generally begins with me finding a colour, or collection of colours, in paper form that I then attempt to change the nature of by adding paint or collage, scrunching and reforming. This gives me the basis of the cover which in turn dictates how the book will work as a whole. No two books are the same, some being quite complex whilst others are small and simple. The finished books are not made with a specific purpose in mind and therefore would easily lend themselves to sketching, personalised note keeping or collecting memorabilia. Over the course of the Open Studios I will be demonstrating some of my methods and have a large collection of hand made art for visitors to see. I will happily answer any questions.
