Growing up in Dover must have affected my fascination with castle construction, passing Dover Castle as I travelled to school every day. Although I have visited many UK castles, it was not until I retired that the urge to paint them arose.
As a professional engineer, my involvement with drawing was primarily straight line plans, so I undertook art lessons to learn how to produce colourful castle representations, and in 2018 I started painting.
In the 20th century, many castles were deforested with serious vegetation removal, and made safe with repaired structural works plus site clearance of old building materials. This allowed safe public access but limits what is available to assist in reimagining the old ruins as they may have been 500 years ago.
I paint mainly with acrylic paint and my work includes old ruins as seen today, ruined castles based on old engravings and published reports, plus the reimagined views of certain castles.
I concentrate on the English/Welsh Marches Castles as there are many of them with interesting historical background information.
